Choosing the right social share services and putting them in the right place has been my focus for a while, on my blog. Through examining stats and doing some research I managed to narrow down the services that were more suitable to my blog and with some split tests (not really split, more like, changing over time :p) paired with the Google Analytics overlay I found a proper position on the page for each of them.
Took some time, but even if it it changes the number of shares by 1, it's worth anyway.

It is always important to know what kind of content is valuable to readers and to write quality content that will be spread in the online space. Making it easy for people to share your content is important too, one click of the mouse and it's on its way!

Well, first off thank you for the kind words and the link. Much appreciated!

Lots of good advice in this post too. The idea that great content will automatically be shared happens only in a land of unicorns that graze in a rainbow forest with marshmallow rain. In the real world - even with a decent network - it can still be rough going.

The Right Buttons, in the Right Places with the Right Call to Action really does make a difference.

I know some people think it's somehow wrong to ask others or to even promote it yourself. But if you're not willing to promote your own content, why would others?

What's your take on new sharing mechanisms like Tynt and Highlighter?

People are definitely more apt to share content that has a lot of shares on it. There's comfort in knowing it really is good since everyone else liked it too. Gets rid of the fear you're sharing something that actually sucks. :)

The asking thing is funny. You see that a lot of time with blog comments. Someone asks why no one is commenting on their blog and they get a response, "well, are you *asking* them to leave a comment". And then you see the light go on.

Knowing WHAT content is being shared and WHERE it's being shared is really important information. I don't think people realize that when they start at their blog wondering where all the traffic is.

Smart. Very smart.

I really like Quarkbase. I'm sure there are newer and shinier tools that people use, but I've always been a fan of that one. I think it offers some pretty cool stats and insights.

The round buttons are one of the many hooks we use on the site. Pretty, aren't they? :)

Re: "If you want someone to share your content, end it with a call to action that asks them to pass your post on to their favorite social network."

Agreed! Can't get what you're lookin' for if you don't ask. I'm a fan of the "GetSocial" wordpress plugin because it scrolls down as you read the post and the "Tweetmeme" plugin. It's been my experience that once people see your content is being shared (social proof), it makes it easier and more likely for new visitors to share that piece as well.

I keep saying this over and over - look in your logs and your analytics to see what types of things people are *already* sharing (i.e. referrals from web-based email - and not necessarily directly from email campaigns) to give you some real good clues on what they WANT to share.

I have a page on one of my sites on how to solicit donations for a particular cause. I noticed a bunch of referrals to it from yahoo mail and similar. So people were already passing it on; that tells me that A) I need to put share buttons on it and 2) I could beef up the page and maybe put some additional similar content up.

(yes, that was intentional)

QuarkBase is pretty cool, love to learn something new over here. :)

As for the sharing bookmarks, I like the SexyBookmarks because it draws more attention although I love how your buttons are round. It's really different and attractive. Is that a plugin or customized by you guys?
