@goldendog
I would have to disagree,
The physical location of businesses is in a constant decline of importance (except in local search). Plus, a proper internet marketing strategy that integrates your offline and online marketing efforts can do wonders for the bottom line of any brick and mortar small business. I wish I could share names and numbers, but I can't

@Lisa

Where is Bing Local on your immediate submission list. Steve Ballmer will be very angry. And we all know that he eats small children when he is that angry.

Your title could have been better.
It should have made it clearer that you were directing the primary focus to LOCAL and to a large extent brick and mortar small business.

All great ideas there are so many more for local folks that delve into customer retention programs that build off of websites, RSS and twitter.

But still especially for local businesses it is Location location location and not a web site that will be the true tipping point of the success for their business.

It's hard work to get traffic. Even harder to get it to stick. I like the street team idea, but I wonder if there's a way to make it work for online businesses only?

Just created a Yahoo Local listing in a fly. Google Local gives me a problem: won't call me to give me the PIN.

Wow, I had never heard of Google Places before, and I tend to keep up on the 'borg pretty well. I've found myself doing more SMB websites lately, and anything I can do to help them get the message out ends up looking good on me.

One other thing that you didn't mention that I've found to be quite helpful: mentioning a niche. Lately I've been doing a lot of network security work for local attorneys. So when I update my business website (which is OK, but can be much MUCH better), there will be a page devoted to services for lawyers and other similar business professionals. I've found that if you cater to a particular niche as part of your business (as opposed to it BEING your business), then it's a good idea to make sure folks know that.

Michael: I think you live and breathe this probably better than anyone. You're always my favorite example of someone who had the nerve to break out of his own little bubble, network with a new industry and really strengthen your brand. I think it's awesome that you're helping other chiropractors learn about SEO. You rock!

Robert: The video suggestion is a great one. Small businesses and video go hand in hand because they're both based on creating that personal connection. Thanks for the suggestions and nonspam comment. :p

Also, being one of the first to comment on the blog is great so the readers will see your comment first before others.

Of course you better read the article and give a great response or your comment will get deleted. :)
