Thanks for this post, Lisa! I’m speaking to The CALL of Arkansas next Saturday about how they can use social media to share their story of fostering and adoption. This post will be quite handy in helping me cover lots of ground in a short time. There are so many tools online that can help, but it probably will be best to stick with the big ones for an introductory session.

Hi, I just started blogging myself to get my feet wet but I think I will also start one for our local animal shelter where I volunteer at. They do have a website but not a blog and I agree this something needed.

Question: would you consider facebook social media? Should I create a fan page or a local business page?

This is a great post. I’ve been a fan of Idealist for a long time, and was so excited yesterday to see them team up with Reddit. My nonprofit organization is strapped for resources but we’re doing all we can to get word out through most of the avenues you mentioned. There are so many great organizations out there – it’s time they had a voice. Thanks for helping it happen.

I swear I’m not deliberately trying to confuse my “personal branding” with photos of parrots. I’ve never registered with Gravatar.com, so I can only assume the avatar being pulled with my email address is related to my wordpress.com blog. Maybe I need a sticky note to remind me never to use that address for blog comments ever again. (Someone slap me for making that mistake more than once now.) Oy.

This is a very valuable post -- thanks! I will use these ideas in a 3-part presentation I'm doing for Pittsburgh nonprofits on Pittsburgh Internet Marketing tools. The Pittsburgh Foundation Center is being very supportive of bringing information on web technology to nonprofits by sponsoring these presentations, and I also encourage other nonprofits to find and use their local Foundation Center as a resource.
