A very thorough article that reminds me a bit of one I read by Rand a while ago. I’ve thought for a while that “white hat” SEO is becoming more like old skool PR (public relations, not page rank!) but with a slightly more technical emphasis – this article would certainly suggest that.

Do you see any long term overlap between SEO and PR departments and do you reckon SEO is headed more towards conventional marketing as Google gets smarter at spotting those who are gaming the system?

Wow, great stuff Justin. On using search queries to find link prospects, I found this great tool (I am in no way associated with it, just a fan) – soloseo.com/tools/linkSearch.html. You type in your keyword, and brings up different searches for finding link prospects. Just thought you might like it :).

I do think outreach is the least interesting part of SEO. But it’s necessary and very effective. I do it a lot, and just see it as an extension of relationship building.

People should really pay attention to the tips about creating personas and then targeting them, classic marketing! I particularly love the little trick with followerwonk and tagcrowd, I spent way too much time playing with it.
