I am very appreciative of all the posts I read here – have been following Lisa and OSM since I met her last November, and now am enjoying the postings of the rest of the team. I am trying to get my own small (very small) business running, and the straight-forward and honest information shared here is like having a free consultant. That may be the case, but what lesson can we learn from that?

Speaking broadly without referring to that specific situation:

In terms of PR, do you want a person fighting a corrupt industry that engaged in corrupt behavior himself? If you’re going to go after an industry with that kind of power, you better make sure you’re clean as a whistle or find someone else who is do to the fighting for you. Anything they can find to expose, they will and they’ll use any means necessary.

Why? Because it turns the spotlight from them to you. There’s a lot of prep in calling someone out and pointing the finger at them. That prep is making sure to cut off any way for them to point it back at you.

I suppose in Spitzer’s case you could add ‘Don’t stand up to the most powerful and corrupt industry in your state if you are paying for trim on the side’. IMO, the resources used to build the case against him was a ridiculous excess of government power.
