I have found that online reviews are always significantly important to local, service-based businesses that are trying to stand out in a highly competitive market. Using good Google/Yahoo maps seo is only part of the equation. Consumers now want to compare businesses side by side without digging into the websites of each company and online reviews are their main tool to do so. It's shocking to see how many businesses still underutilize them.

Danika, this is great. I couldn't agree with you more and think you give some excellent examples of why reviews are good content. Since I always tend to think about things from a branding or reputation standpoint too, allowing reviews on your own site not only helps create content and influence sales but helps you control sentiment around your business.

People are going to speak their mind no matter what, and since there are so many outlets to do so on the internet, you'll want to encourage them to come to you first. This way you know what the problems are, how to fix it and then show you *are* fixing it.

While you go into how having a balance of negative and positive reviews look natural, consumers also want to see that you did something about the negative review. While sites like Yelp are great (I know you'd hurt me if I said otherwise) the reviews are housed in a forum you can't control. Having reviews on-site is a great place to influence any of those naysayers.

I think reviews are wonderful for business owners to get. Not only does it help the consumer with weighing out the product options to buy, it also brings the seller business from potential customers that are at the end of the sales funnel. If you have a decent product there is no question that reviews will bring you customers ready to buy. As you said above, your own content is your own opinion and anyone can make themselves look good if you are a decent write.

Hi Michael,
Thank you! There is always something new to learn when it comes to reviews. I'll be sharing more resources in the near future, especially as Google becomes more aggressive in the review space.
