Hi Ryan!

First, I would put this post together with this one: http://outspokenmedia.com/internet-marketing-conferences/targeting-humans/ and this one: http://outspokenmedia.com/seo/content-based-outreach-for-link-building/.

Then I would remember a few key things. When you're doing outreach, you're talking to a person, not a blog. Be polite, friendly, respectful, and don't be pushy or demanding. Pitching bloggers is basically cold calling.

If you get a sales phone call, and the salesperson just launches into their spiel without introducing themselves, stating their purpose, or engaging you in any way, you're probably going to get annoyed and hang up, and you're perfectly justified in doing so. Remember that when you're the one doing the calling/pitching.

At the same time you're asking for something from someone (in this case, a guest blogging opportunity), you have to be willing and ready to offer them something in return. Yes, they're going to get free content, but what is the value to their site? Is there an existing post on their blog you can mention and link to in yours? Is there an ongoing theme on their blog you can piggyback off of and offer value to their readers? You have to give to get.

Hope that helps!

Michelle,

What advise would you give a blogger that is looking to reach out to other bloggers looking to Guest Post and contribute? I guess a better way to put it is are there practices that are frowned against? Are there offensive ways of going about things that Bloggers and Community Managers that should be avoided?

Thanks
