@Randy - Hey buddy - When it comes to prioritizing, a lot of what I think that comes from is analysis of your competitors. I just finished doing a presentation at SEOmoz's Pro seminar where I discussed this same issue but shared more of the way we reverse engineered the rankings above us and changed our strategy. I recommend you find 5-10-15-20 metrics and look at how your site compares to the top 10 on those - that might help you start to prioritize, so for instance if one of your metrics is links on homepages, you might see that you are weak there and place a higher priority on links that come from people's homepages than getting deeper links, same could be said for anchor text - you sometimes need to know what you are up against and how you are getting beat before you can prioritize the work.

@Jason, sorry if that wasn't clear amigo. I am saying that I have a client who had a 20+ % use of the targeted anchor text in their links, which was significantly higher than the others - that would make them an outlier and more likely to ranking fluctuations in my opinion. So my goal is to bring the closer to the average.

@aaron - here's the preso: http://www.slideshare.net/affsum/link-building-victories-and-failures

@Kathy - this client is in a VERY competitive space as in over 4 million searches a month, so maybe its just that the people at the top are very aggressive?

Thanks for the comments guys!

"Wil talks about one of his clients. They have links from the New York Times, Cosmo, Oprah Magazine, etc. All this and their rankings did not move."

I would be very interested to hear more about the specifics of that scenario. This would require some serious studying and analysis. I have seen opposite results which makes me wonder what the differences are.

Finding industry sites with broken links and offering a replacement source of information is a tactic that I have never considered before. I bet this strategy is way under-utilized. Therefore, it is probably a great one to explore.

I found some really useful material in there.

Hi Lisa,
If you have a spare minute could you clarify what you/Wil meant by the following (I know your conference schedule must be hectic!)

"Are you trending out your % of targeted anchor text vs the top 10? He has a client who is at 29 percent the average of the top 10. That’s unnatural."

Are you saying the client had much lower percentage of anchor text, or significantly more? For example, if the top 10 all has 10% targeted anchor text, does the client only have 2.9%, or do they have 12.9%?

Or is my question somewhat irrelevant because both are unnatural / problematic?

My fingers are crossed for your laptop...

Great liveblogging. Sorry about your computer...

How do people here go about prioritizing your SEO work? I mean, there is so much information out and about regarding so many different SEO topics and i''m interested as to how others ensure they are putting the right initiatives at the top of the list (especially when it comes to ongoing SEO work for multiple clients)?
