A fun post. The really cool thing about Social Media is the ability to find, join, or create communities. What would have been a handful of devotees in a clubhouse, now is a melange of distributed and overlapping groups on a worldwide scale.

I think you've taken Seth's idea of accents and really fleshed it out well. When we start to think about communities in terms of family or culture, the significance of these groups rises. It's a privilege to be accepted into a family or culture, and it's just as much a privilege to lead one.

The topic of me not having a "real job" comes up when I visit family too. They know about the day to day stuff but wonder what all the internet activity is all about. I figure that is common for many of us.

Lisa, wishing you and your family the best. You've had quite a 2009 and I'm thankful you take the time to create such valuable content, engage with the community, and live blog so many of the events (or sessions) I have not had a chance to attend throughout the year.

Have a happy and joy-filled Thanksgiving!

Great article Lucy. The analogies you draw are quite accurate, in my view.

A family is certain a community. A tight knit community with exclusive membership, but undoubtedly a community in the true sense of the word.

The various web communities we belong to are very similar to our family, although probably not as intimate or as personal as the community of those we love and share DNA with. But make no mistake; web communities are real live entities. They share many of the same traits and quirks as our community of family.

Both communities can nurture us and enrage us - often on the same day! We need to work at maintaining the relationships that we have established in both our family and web based communities.

But you all ready understand this Lucy. Even if you don't have a real job. :-)

Happy Holidays to you and your Long Island community!
